What is a Virtual DJ

Virtual DJ is like an upgraded version of a music player with much more advanced features and options as compared to iTunes or a CD player or any Hi-Fi player.

A virtual DJ allows you to play two or more songs at the same time. You can adjust the tempo, speed, volume, sound, pitch, etc. You can even apply effects like the loop to one song or another. Crossfade, scratching songs, setting cues, these are just a few of the features which a Virtual DJ has. However, these aren’t it. A virtual DJ has every feature which a DJ would expect to be included and be able to mix. A virtual DJ also has a search engine which helps you search and locate your favorite songs. You can organize your songs on the virtual DJ but if you do not have a particular song, the Virtual DJ will help you by streaming it online through the internet. Of course, that requires an additional subscription for which you will have to pay. DJs are suggested by other DJs using the Virtual DJ on what kind of songs and genre are the best.

It not only plays audio files but also video and karaoke by connecting it to the computer or a compatible device.

A few of the effects which a virtual DJ comprises of ranges anything from traditional flanger to modern beat aware sounds. It even helps spice up your videos with the plethora of effects that it has. Virtual DJ is also compatible with many types of DJ mixers and controllers because of its plug-and-play compatibility. If it is not compatible with a particular controller, you can always change the default settings. The ‘VDJScript’ Language feature in the Virtual DJ allows you to do some tweaking according to your liking.

What is a Mixer

Everyone has come across a mixer at some point in their life. However, very few people actually understand how an audio mixer works. The audio mixer takes more than 2 sounds and merges them in such a way that one sound is produced. The various song mixes and recorded in this way, by optimizing and enhancing sound, equalization and effects.

The board of the mixer contains the various controls. The controls are divided into 2 layouts: the split and in-line. In an in-line layout, the controls and the input is located on the same strip. Whereas in a split layout, they are located in other halves. The inputs are the entry point for sound sources. These sound sources are connected through a plug-in. With the channel equalization, you can control the frequencies of the treble and the bass. Auxiliary wires are those wires which allow you to send sound to another device.

Faders are known to be the most important function and tool of a mixer. These sliders allow you to raise or lower individual channels as soon as it is to go into the final mix.

How To Connect A Virtual DJ To The Mixer

To connect the Virtual DJ to the mixer, you will need to have the VirtualDJ Basic or VirtualDJ Professional. These editions of the Virtual DJ support the connection and use of an external audio mixer. The home, limited and console editions do not support it. Avoid using them. However, it is crucial to note that the VirtualDJ Basic is not compatible with MIDI controllers like the Hercules DJ Console. For MIDI controllers, the VirtualDJ Professional is the best compatible device to use.

Virtual Dj Sound Card

You will require a sound card. You should either have two sound cards or a sound card with multiple sound outputs. For example, a 5.1 surround sound card or a DJ sound card like the Numark DJIO. If, however, you are using a computer then chances are that a 5.1 surround sound card will already be built in. The sound card allows you to output the sound from the Virtual DJ deck to the audio mixer through the two separate channels.

Once the sound cards are secured and connected properly, you will need to go to the ‘Configurations’ and click on ‘Sound Settings’. Choose the output as the External Mixer and then proceed to select the right sound card. Attach two cables to the output of your sound card and connect them to the two channels on the audio mixer.

After double checking the setup menu, click on the audio tab. You should be able to see your external mixer’s name on the screen. Click your mixer’s name to confirm the connection of the external mixer and the Virtual DJ. Make sure that the volume sliders are full so that all the sound can be adequately transferred to the external mixer. You should be able to hear the sound clearly.

That is all. If, however, you are still confused, you can always check YouTube for online tutorials on how to connect a virtual DJ to an external mixer. Watching a tutorial is often easier to understand.
